Could it be that the secrets to a fulfilling life lie not within expensive medications, but rather in our very surroundings, daily activities, and diet? This concept is what Dr. Joe Pazona and Cat Williams discussed on the Balls Deep podcast, which took inspiration from the Netflix documentary “Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones”. From gardening and walking to family dinners and real human connection, this episode goes deep (balls deep, if you will) into the daily habits that help people around the world live well into their nineties and hundreds with joy and purpose. Continuing reading for the top longevity tips from around the world:

1. Purpose: The Japanese Call It “Ikigai”

ikigai is popular among longevity tips

The first, and arguably most important, of these longevity tips? Having a reason to wake up every morning. Dr. Pazona highlights how people in Blue Zones (like Okinawa, Japan, and Sardinia, Italy) are still actively contributing to their communities well into old age. Crafting traditional musical instruments, gardening, babysitting grandchildren – these elders aren’t simply alive; they’re thriving. “Don’t ever retire,” advises Dr. Pazona. “Or at least, don’t retire from purpose.”

Takeaway: Find something meaningful to do every day. Your life might just depend on it.

2. Whole Foods, Straight From the Ground

Every Blue Zone has a simple dietary rule: Eat real food. This means whole foods that are locally sourced, seasonal, and wholesome, not the ultra-processed products full of sugar that American grocery stores sell. The centrarians from Loma Linda eat lentils, Costa Rica has beans, and Greece is known for vegetables all of which are nutritious, colorful, and fibrous. Carbonated drinks, fast food, and prepackaged meals are non-existent in their daily lives, so avoiding them is among the longevity tips.

Forget fad diets. If it comes from a factory or you can’t pronounce the ingredients, it’s usually best to skip it.

3. Movement Without a Gym Membership

It may come as a shock, but the healthiest individuals on the planet do not use the elliptical or do CrossFit. The ‘workout’ as they know it, consists of enjoyable day-to-day activities such as walking to the market, gardening, cooking, or taking care of grandkids. In Dr. Pazona’s words, what would be considered exercise in the West, the one-hour workout followed by hours of sitting, is counterproductive. All that's needed is ‘movement’, which means staying active throughout the day, not necessarily completing designated exercises.

Pro Tip: Utilize the stairs and park farther away. Walk with a friend instead of meeting for coffee.

4. Community & Relationships Are Important

Most striking, and heartwrenching might be the human connection theme throughout the Netflix show. From Japanese women who garden and sing together to church-centered communities in California, we learn that social relations are important for one’s health as well as longevity. In these societies, aging people are included instead of secluded. We are reminded that even when you eat well and exercise frequently, loneliness can counteract everything.

5. Environment Matters More Than You Think

The modern American lifestyle, as Dr. Pazona points out, does not embrace healthy living in any way. As a matter of fact, Dr. Pazona says that our environment influences our choices to a greater extent than we estimate. When we’re surrounded by fast food chains, more roads than walkways, and stress filled to the brim, we have no option but to succumb. We can push back with purposeful planning, like residing in pedestrian friendly neighborhoods, cultivating gardens, or meeting like-minded people.

Take Action: Do An Environment Audit

Dr. Pazona leaves listeners with a challenge: Audit your environment. What’s one thing you can change to support a longer, healthier, more joyful life? Is it cleaning out your pantry? Being more active? Spending more time with family and friends? Whatever it is, do it today.

And who knows, you just may find you’re on your way to joining the centenarian club.

These longevity tips inspired by some of the healthiest people across the world can help you live a longer life. Want to start by cleaning up your diet? Check out some of our practical nutrition tips for wellness!
