GLP-1 Agonists
February 4, 2025

Dr. Joe Pazona and co-host Cat Williams discuss GLP-1 agonists, often referred to as “miracle weight loss drugs,” in a new episode of the Balls Deep podcast. These drugs are becoming more popular for people who are trying to lose weight. If you are curious about Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, this is the episode for you! Continue reading as we dive into these medications:

What Are GLP-1 Agonists

Ozempic has been all the rage on TV so it is highly likely that you have heard the name before. But, Ozempic is only one of many medications in a class known as GLP-1 agonists. These medicines were developed to assist with diabetes but have revolutionized the weight loss industry. GLP-1 agonists also include Wegovy and Mounjaro.

GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-like peptide-1, which is secreted from the gut after a meal. It helps regulate blood sugar, digestion, and appetite. Unfortunately, its simpler version lasts for only seconds which is its biggest disadvantage. Scientists have formulated methods to extend its effects, leading to a more complex medication that enhances weight loss while being hunger suppressing at the same time.

Here are a few commonly prescribed GLP – 1 medications:

  • Semaglutide (brand names Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus)
  • Tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro), which also has an effect on another hormone for additional effects

How Do GLP-1 Agonists Work?

In general, GLP-1 agonists promote weight loss through the following two mechanisms:

  1. Suppression of appetite and cravings: These medications target the brain to curtail appetite so one can achieve satiety with small portions of food. Many people claim that they cut back on the intake of sugar, alcohol, and other junk foods.
  2. Prevention of excessive food intake: They send signals to the stomach to delay emptying. When the stomach is full, you feel full. And that is why so many people on these medications say they intuitively eat less.

Because of these effects, researchers are even testing GLP-1 drugs for alcohol dependence and binge eating disorder.

An Important Study

A 2021 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which was considered revolutionary, examined semaglutide and its effect on weight loss. The findings were astonishing:

  • Out of 50% of participants studied, more than half were able to lose over 15% of their entire body weight.
  • Weight loss was maintainable, which is astounding in the context of anti-obesity medications.

Unlike past medications for losing weight, which relied on powerful stimulants with dangerous side effects, GLP-1 agonists seem to have been the first drugs that provided effective long-term weight loss without any risk of harm.

Does It Have Side Effects?

Like any drug on the market, GLP-1 agonists are not without faults. The most commonly reported side effects are those that stem from their action with the digestive system.

  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Heartburn or reflux
  • Mood changes (in severe cases, some say they suffer from depression)

Somewhat more serious but very infrequent adverse effects are pancreatitis and gallstones. Additionally, since these drugs decrease the rate of stomach emptying, it is important to stop these medications before surgery, or else food can remain in the stomach for too long, leading to complications.

Side effects are typically mild and improve over time, particularly after changing your lifestyle for the better.

Are GLP-1 Agonists Right For You?

These medications are not a requirement for each and every individual. Dr. Pazona points out that these medications are a tool, they are not a formula to automatically solve the weight issue. While these help initiate the process of weight loss, the sustaining result still requires people to shift their habits.

Who can take advantage?

  • Those with a BMI of 30 or higher (or 27 or higher if you have certain health issues) will benefit.
  • People who have tried to lose weight through exercise or dieting without success.
  • A person who wants to reset their habits through medicine.

The drugs are useful but not everyone should start them without help. Dr. Pazona cautions about suspicious online pharmacies or “wellness spas” that dispense these medications without proper medical authorization. Instead, speak to a healthcare professional to:

  • Help manage the side effects
  • Change the prescribed dose
  • Use the medication as part of a comprehensive weight management strategy.
